About Lawn Party
Lawn Party is an 18-card solo game by Michael Erceg, illustrated by Lucas Bertolucci. The party is a week away and the lawn is a mess. Each day the grass grows and you mow twice, and the trick is that short grass reveals the wildlife underneath: snails, flowers, mushrooms and the odd rock that stops your mower dead.
It placed 20th overall at the BoardGameGeek 2022 Solitaire Print and Play Contest and 4th for Best Use of Theme. It is the quickest print in this batch: six pages for the cards, two pages of rules, fifteen minutes to play. The lawn cards are flipped and rotated to show grass at levels 1 to 4, so the whole lawn is on the table and the game is mostly planning.
How to play in one minute
- Shuffle the lawn cards. Lay nine in a 3x3 grid at level 4 (long grass) and build the display with the player card, the sun card and one lawn card that sets the week’s scoring conditions.
- Each day: advance the sun, then grow every card one level (cards reaching level 4 are discarded and replaced from the deck).
- Mow twice, in a straight line across the lawn, down to level 1 or 2. Hitting a rock at level 1 ends that mow and removes the rock from the game at a cost of one point.
- After seven days, add up the wildlife showing on the lawn according to the scoring conditions.
- You win if the wildlife score equals or beats the grass score, the sum of all grass levels on the lawn.
