About Hall of the Dwarven King

Hall of the Dwarven King is a solo dice game by metalsnail, first released on itch.io in August 2017 for the Really Difficult Jam. You are a newly crowned Dwarven King who would like a palace. Your followers would rather spend their days drinking and fighting. Each of your seven dice is the mood of one dwarf: sometimes they feel like mining or building, often they do not.

It is a classic of free roll-and-write games: one sheet, a pencil and seven ordinary dice. It was also picked as a Button Shy Board Game of the Month in February 2018. It suits solo players who like to squeeze points out of bad rolls, and it has an easy Elven mode and a hard Legendary mode.

How to play in one minute

  1. Print the sheet and roll your seven dice. Each die shows what one dwarf wants to do.
  2. Assign dwarves to tasks such as digging, building and other jobs on the sheet. Push them too hard against their mood and they walk off.
  3. Build Taverns and Gaming Halls so the dwarves are happier to do what you ask, or spend gold to bribe them.
  4. Dig deeper for gems and points, and add rooms such as the Throne Room and Vaults to your palace.
  5. When the game ends, total your score. Share it in the comments on itch.io and try to beat it.
