What you need

  • A printer (black & white is fine)
  • 3 sheets of US Letter paper
  • 4 red and 4 blue pieces of different sizes (Lego towers of 1 to 4 bricks, Looney Pyramids or chess pieces)
  • 4 two-colour dice (paint or sticker old dice: 3 sides red, 3 sides blue) or 4 Othello discs

About Looney Dejarik

Looney Dejarik is the Looney Labs Holiday Gift for 2025: a two-player abstract game by Andrew Looney for the round board of Dejarik, the holographic game from the films. Looney Labs bought a real-life Dejarik set, did not care for its rules, so Andy wrote his own. Combat is decided by piece size, a luck bonus from chance cubes, and position.

You do not need the official set. The PDF includes a printable board, and the pieces can be Lego towers, Looney Pyramids or chess pieces. It suits two players who like short abstract games with a little luck, from teenagers to adults.

How to play in one minute

  1. Print the board. Each player takes 4 pieces of increasing size in their colour (red or blue); the largest is the Leader.
  2. Roll one chance cube: the colour that comes up goes first.
  3. On your turn, move one (sometimes two) of your pieces and possibly attack an enemy piece.
  4. Resolve an attack by comparing piece size, plus a luck bonus from the chance cubes and a position bonus.
  5. Win by capturing the enemy Leader, or by capturing all three of their other pieces.

What’s in the PDF

  • 3 pages on US Letter: background, equipment lists for the official and DIY versions, the rules and a printable game board.
  • DIY options: red and blue pieces (Lego, pyramids) with painted dice, or black and white chess pieces with Othello discs as two-sided dice.
