About this printable shogi set
This printable shogi set from PrintablePaper.net (Savetz Publishing) is a three-page introduction to Japanese chess: a 9x9 board, pieces with their promoted forms printed in red, and a page covering setup, movement, promotion, drops and checkmate.
Shogi is a cousin of Western chess with one big twist: captured pieces change sides. Instead of moving, you may drop a captured piece back onto the board as your own,. Pieces reaching the far three ranks may promote. As in chess, you win by checkmating the king.
How to use it
- Print the three pages and cut out the pieces. Both players use the same pieces, pointing the narrow end at the opponent.
- Set up as the guide shows: king in the centre of the back row; bishop and rook on the second row; nine pawns on the third.
- Black moves first. Move a piece, capture by landing on an enemy, or drop a captured piece on an empty square.
- Checkmate the king to win.
