About Night of the Mummy
Night of the Mummy is the second game in Jellybean Games’ Masquerade series, a standalone sequel to Dracula’s Feast: New Blood by Peter C. Hayward with art by Michael Dashow. The Mummy’s curse has brought the exhibits of the Museum of Unnatural History to life, and they have crashed the annual masquerade ball. Each of the 4 to 8 players is one guest, from the Gargoyle and the Sasquatch to the Statue of Anubis, each with a unique ability; deduce who everyone is and accuse them all to break the curse.
The rules follow New Blood with one change that gives the game its character: some guests hide their face when they dance, showing the back of their card instead, so a dance no longer guarantees information. The Cat Burglar, the Magic Mirror and the Picture of Dorian Gray all play on that. It runs 15 to 20 minutes for ages 10 and up, can be combined with New Blood, and does not need it. The files are free for personal use on jellybean.games, so the download button goes there.
How to play in one minute
- Choose guests for your player count (6 for 4 players, up to 9 for 8), always including the Mummy; skip the three advanced guests at first. Lay out their accusation cards and give everyone a Yes and a No whisper card.
- Place one guest face down as the Mystery Guest (two with 4–5 players), shuffle the Mummy back in and deal one guest to each player.
- On your turn, inquire (ask a player if they are a specific guest; they pass a face-down whisper card), dance, or accuse.
- In a dance, everyone else closes their eyes and the two dancers hold up their cards; a guest who hides their face shows the card back instead. A refused dance lets you inquire of another player.
- To accuse, reveal your card and give an accusation card to every unrevealed player; they pass whisper cards, you shuffle and reveal. All Yes wins. The Mummy, the Cat Burglar and others also have their own win conditions.
