About Timeline Classic

Timeline, designed by Frédéric Henry, is a quick card game about putting events, inventions and discoveries in the right order. Each card shows an event on one side and the same event with its date on the other. Asmodee’s Print & Play site offers a free Timeline Classic demo, plus a separate Timeline activity poster.

It is a good fit for families, classrooms and trivia fans from age 8. You do not need to know exact dates, only whether something came before or after what is already on the table, so younger players can hold their own.

How to play in one minute

  1. Deal each player a few cards, date side down. Place one card from the deck face up, date side visible, to start the timeline.
  2. On your turn, choose a card from your hand and place it where you think it belongs: before, after or between the cards already down.
  3. Flip it over. If the date fits, it stays.
  4. If it is wrong, discard it and draw a replacement from the deck.
  5. The first player to empty their hand wins. If several do so in the same round, they play an extra round.

What’s in the PDF

  • The “Timeline Demo” file listed under Games on the Timeline Classic page: a short deck of double-sided event cards and the rules.
  • A separate “Timeline Activity Poster” on the same page (an activity, not the game).
  • Downloads open after you sign in with a free My asmodee account. We could not open the file, so the page count and duplex instructions are not listed here.
  • Print in colour on card stock and check how the fronts line up with the backs before you cut.
