About the Witch’s Curse escape room

You realise you are trapped in a cottage until you prove yourself worthy. On the wall is an inscription, the first message from Sylvara, the witch who lives here, and every clue that follows is another of her riddles. Break all twelve and the curse is lifted.

Mary of My Party Games spent a long time on this one and it shows in the props: a recipe left in the dining room, a runic alphabet in the kitchen, tarot cards in the fridge and rotating cipher wheels held together with brads. It is meant for ages 8 and up, with younger children welcome on a team, and adults enjoy it too. It needs no special equipment beyond brads and a mirror, and every hiding place is an ordinary spot in a house or apartment.

How to play in one minute

  1. Print each clue (colour, card stock for the pieces that need cutting), assemble the cipher wheels with two brads and hide every clue in the spot the post names (laundry, dining room, under a rug, behind a plant, a curtain, the fridge, the shower).
  2. Cut the storyline cards and hide one with each clue.
  3. Give players two or three hint cards; you keep the hints sheet.
  4. Start a 45-minute timer and hand over Clue 1. Clues must be solved in order: each answer points to the next hiding place.
  5. The last clue, read in a mirror, says the curse is broken. The post suggests switching off the lights if time runs out. With more than five players, split into teams and hide two copies of each clue.

What’s in the files

  • Separate downloads on the post: storyline, hint cards, hints sheet, twelve clues and a combined four-page answer key.
  • Colour printing; card stock for the hint cards and the assembled puzzles.
  • Clue 4 and Puzzle 10 need cutting and a brad each; Puzzle 11 has tarot cards and text strips to cut.
  • Personal use only: share the page link, not the files.
